Alta Vista
Alta Vista is full of solid postwar houses on generous, tree-lined lots. Many have changed hands a few times and are ready for updates inside and out.
Painting in Alta Vista
Alta Vista grew quickly after the Second World War, and most of its streets were built through the 1950s and 1960s. Bungalows, split-levels and two-storey brick homes sit on wider lots than you'd find in newer suburbs, with trees that have had decades to fill in. The neighbourhood is also home to The Ottawa Hospital's General Campus and CHEO along Smyth Road. It's quiet and established, and it's close to both downtown and the Rideau River.
Houses of that era were built solidly, but many interiors are overdue for more than a colour change. Original ceilings, walls patched over many years and trim with a thick build-up of paint are common. We handle the prep, including crack and hole repairs, and help you choose colours that work in rooms shaded by big trees. Estimates are free, and we're licensed, insured and BBB accredited. The quickest way to start is our online estimate form, where you can add photos of the rooms you want painted.

Local homes
Textured ceilings are common in Alta Vista. Many homes built or renovated between the 1950s and the late 1970s have stipple or popcorn ceilings, and anything installed before 1980 may contain asbestos. Before we touch one, we arrange testing with a certified inspector. A positive result means a licensed abatement contractor takes it down first, and our finishing work starts only after that. Once it's clear, you choose between a smooth skim-coated ceiling and a knockdown texture, and we paint it.
Houses finished before about 1960 may also have lead in their older paint layers, so it's sensible to test before any sanding. Outside, the big trees that make Alta Vista so pleasant also keep some walls in shade for most of the day. Siding and trim on those sides stay damp longer, which can lead to mildew and peeling. We clean and prep those surfaces properly and choose products that resist peeling, cracking and chalking through Ottawa winters.
Services in Alta Vista
All of our painting services are available in Alta Vista. These are the ones we are asked about most here.
Stipple and popcorn ceilings turn up often in Alta Vista's 1950s to 1970s homes. Testing comes first for anything installed before 1980, followed by a smooth skim-coat or knockdown finish.
Bungalow living rooms, split-level stairways, bedrooms and hallways, with cracks and holes repaired first. We use premium low-VOC paint on interior walls and help with colour choices for shaded rooms.
Siding, trim, fascia, soffits and doors on houses shaded by mature trees. We prep damp-prone walls carefully before painting, and every exterior job starts with a colour consultation.

View ProjectUsually, yes, once the surface is ready. Walls shaded by mature trees can grow mildew and hold moisture, which ruins paint adhesion. Those areas need cleaning and time to dry, and any loose or peeling paint has to come off. We'll assess the condition and include the prep in your written proposal.
If you can, deal with the ceilings first. Asbestos testing for pre-1980 texture has to be arranged ahead of time, and removal and repainting are easiest in an empty house. Walls, trim and doors can follow as part of the same project. Depending on the size of the house and the state of the walls, a residential project like this runs 1 to 5 days.
There are two options: a smooth finish, done by skimming and sanding the ceiling, or a knockdown texture, which adds a subtle pattern and can be more forgiving on older ceilings that aren't perfectly flat. Either way, ceilings in Alta Vista's postwar homes that date from before 1980 are tested for asbestos before any work begins.
